SALISBURY, Md. (AP) — State police in Maryland and Delaware have teamed up with hopes of sharing data on scrap metal sales and cracking down on the trade in stolen metal on the peninsula.
The Daily Times of Salisbury reports that Maryland’s state system for tracking property information, including scrap metal, helped Delaware State Police draft legislation for a similar system.
If approved, Maryland State Police Lt. Dalaine Brady says that authorities in both states would be able to track scrap metal sales in the other state.
Starting on Saturday, Maryland began requiring dealers and processors of scrap metal to have state licenses. Recycling centers pay $210 a year to access the website to enter transactions. They can also use it as an inventory system.
